How the running league works

Your run. Your team. Your chance to win. RunTeaming is a year-round running league where a bowling-style handicap levels the playing field. You don’t have to be the fastest runner to win. You do have to compete. Your best run each week can make the difference for your team.

Connect once. Then just open the app.

Keep recording your runs the way you already do. Once you’re connected, all you do is open RunTeaming. It automatically picks up your recorded runs, scores them and updates your league. Your team, scores and standings are right there in the app.

Choose iPhone or Android to see the right installation steps and current availability for your phone. Android runners can use the detailed Health Connect guide; a watch is optional.

The website is optional. It shows the same league information as the app, if you prefer to look in a browser. You don’t need to visit it to take part.

One week. A reason to go again.

League weeks run from Monday through Sunday. Your highest-scoring qualifying run becomes your best run for that week. A better run replaces it; the league does not add all your run scores together.

Your weekly contribution also includes your handicap and one participation point for each qualifying run. That gives another run a contribution even when it doesn’t beat your best. The scoring guide walks through the numbers.

Your team’s top four weekly contributions count toward the matchup. If one teammate misses a week, the other four can still provide a full set of scores. If more than one misses, the team has fewer scores to count.

A level playing field. A match worth winning.

You’re placed on a team when you join. Teams fill to five runners as people arrive, so a forming team may initially be smaller. You don’t need to bring a group or organize a shared meeting time.

The handicap levels the playing field by adjusting scores for each runner’s usual performance. It puts winning within reach across different paces. Beat your usual performance and you can beat a runner who is faster than you. Your effort can change the result.

Teams are redrawn and handicaps recalculated each month, with opponents rotating weekly. A winning lineup doesn’t stay together month after month, and your handicap keeps pace with your performance. Each week brings a match to compete for.

Before your first week

Do we have to run together?

No. This is an online running league. Your teammates can run in different places and at different times. You share a weekly team score.

Do I have to be fast?

You don’t have to be the fastest to win. The handicap levels the playing field so runners at different paces can compete for the result. See the scoring examples to see how it works, including what counts as a run.

Can I use a treadmill or just my phone?

Treadmill running sessions can count when a compatible source records the distance and duration and makes the session available to RunTeaming. On Android, that connection runs through Health Connect. You can also record outdoor runs with a compatible phone app; a watch and heart-rate reading are not required for every run.

Do I need to use the website?

No. The app automatically brings in your recorded runs when you open it and shows your league information. The website is an optional way to see the same information. Choose your phone for the right installation steps.

Does RunTeaming need my route?

No. RunTeaming does not request location permission or read your route. Read the privacy page for the data it uses.
